HCSM Journal

História, Ciências, Saúde - Manguinhos (HCSM) is a quarterly publication of the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (COC/Fiocruz). Launched in July 1994, the journal publishes original peer-reviewed articles and research notes, documents and images of historical merit, debates, interviews, and reviews of books and online resources, all pertaining to the history of science and health. In addition to its four regular issues, HCSM releases at least one thematic supplement per year.

Available in print and in open-access online format, HCSM focuses on the interaction of multiple fields of knowledge. Although the health sciences are at its core, the journal also opens its pages to other fields that share an affinity with the historical perspective.

The journal has received the highest ranking (A1) in History from Qualis, the system used by the Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (Capes) to assess graduate courses and scientific journals. The publication has also received a grade of A1 in Education, Sociology, Environmental Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

HCSM is indexed by the Thomson Reuters Corporation, owner of the information services formerly belonging to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), which holds one of the world’s most comprehensive databases on scientific publications. It is also indexed by SCimago Journal Rank (SJR) and SciELO, among other databases in Brazil and around the globe.

As part of a pioneer initiative among scientific journals in Brazil, HCSM maintains a bilingual blog (English and Portuguese), a Facebook page, and a Twitter profile. The blog offers a compilation of interviews, news items, analyses, and other content that expand on the articles published in each issue and raise vital questions in the fields of history, science, and health.
